What is Grassroots Development and How can Funders Support Community Development in a Sustainable Manner?

May 16 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

May 16th, 2019 | 7:30, The Boston Foundation
Part One of Three Events on “From Grassroots to Community-Driven: How to Fund Truly Sustainable, Just, and Impactful Development”
Many funders and organizations have accepted that top-down, outside-in development does not work. However, the level of funding to locally-led and community-driven organizations still lags far behind their more traditional development peers. Just 2% of all aid funding goes directly to organizations in the Global South (The Guardian). Similarly, just 4% of philanthropic grants in the US go to organizations led by people of color (New Profit/Next Street). Remarkable grassroots leaders and some progressive funders are working to shift this paradigm and challenge the status quo. How can funders effectively support grassroots, locally-led development internationally and at home? What are the invisible barriers to funding that local and diverse leaders face and how do we break them down? How do we understand the level of community participation and real decision-making power in the work we fund? What kind of support are local leaders looking for and how can we better support them? This series of conversations is designed to unpack these questions, challenge our assumptions, and open conversations about practical ways to change the paradigm.
Part one will be held on May 16th and will focus on asking what do we mean when we talk about grassroots development? How does that intersect or not with locally-led or community-driven? What are best practices in identifying and nurturing local leaders to amplify their impact? This conversation features a set of leaders from across the spectrum – from funders to intermediaries to local leaders. We will unpack all the different terms that go along with this work and understand their models of supporting truly sustainable, just, and impactful grassroots development.
NEID will host this event in partnership with Imago Dei Fund and the Boston Foundation. The second and third sessions will be held in June and September.

This is a NEID members-only event. Please contact us at neid@neidonors.org if you would like to attend or learn more about the event.
