2019 NEID Giving Circle for Refugees

February 27 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

February 27, 2019 | 6:00 PM to 9:00
Please RSVP to receive location
Though most conflicts today are internal to states, the global refugee crisis transcends national borders to affect all corners of the world. Irrespective of the conflict, refugees face a host of common issues as they seek peace and security, ranging from the trauma of the refugee journey itself to challenging humanitarian conditions in refugee camps, prejudice from host communities, a lack of self-reliance and livelihood, and even problems arising as a result of resettling or returning home. Should refugees successfully overcome these obstacles, they must still cope with the trauma of war for generations to come. This Circle will explore some of these key challenges, examine gaps in funding, and seek to identify ways to improve the lives of refugees.
Our first speaker on February 27 is Ciarán Donnelly , the Senior Vice President of International Programs at the  International Rescue Committee .  From the IRC’s headquarters in New York, he oversees humanitarian programs in 35 countries worldwide, which reached more than 23 million displaced and conflict-affected people last year. Having joined the IRC’s response to the civil war in Burundi in 2001, he went on to lead the agency’s field operations in Uganda, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has also served the IRC as Director of Strategic Analysis & Management, and as Vice President of Program Quality. Previously, Donnelly worked with Concern Worldwide in East Timor and with the International Security Information Service in Brussels. An Irish citizen, he holds degrees from Trinity College Dublin, the College of Europe, and the University of Cambridge. Ciaran will help NEID open both Giving Circles on Refugees and provide a landscape overview of today’s refugee challenges
The NEID Refugee Circle will be run simultaneously in two separate locations – one in Boston and one on the Seacoast region of MA/NH and Maine. Most sessions will run separately, with the exception of the first session, which will be run together in Boston with all welcome to join in person or via Zoom video link.  The two Giving Circles on Refugees will decide as a group the degree of collaboration between circles as the conversation evolves.
Both Circles will be meeting on the same dates on the evenings of February 27th, March 28th, April 24th, May 22nd, June 12th, and September TBD.
The first three meetings are open to all NEID Members but after the first three sessions each participant of the Giving Circle will ultimately be expected to contribute funds. NEID members will be asked to contribute a minimum of $1,200 while non-members will asked to first become members ($500) and then also contribute a minimum of $1,000 (a special rate for those joining NEID to participate in the giving circle).
